Connecting Communities
A newly integrated landscape.
Create Creativity
I was pleased to attend the 2017 NHS Scotland Event – which was held at Glasgow’s Scottish Event Campus (previously called the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre). Then in its 12th year, the theme was ‘Working Differently across Boundaries: Transforming Health and Social Care’. It highlighted the critical role of the workforce in driving and managing change, and the importance of boundary spanning across organisations and sectors to meet improved outcomes for people.
Over the two days, there were four plenary sessions, 14 parallel sessions, four spotlight sessions and approximately 230 posters on display. Once again, the exhibition area was a useful opportunity to meet a range of organisations showcasing their products and services.
Poster Walks
I found the facilitated poster walks helpful in discussing what teams were trying to achieve, how they evaluated their improvements, and their ideas on spread and sustainability. A range of initiatives, changes and improvements that took place across NHS Scotland (and beyond) were showcased.
I facilitated a poster walk on integrated care and met a range of colleagues from across NHS Scotland (and beyond).

Kindness Matters
Closing the event, Paul Gray, the then Chief Executive of NHS Scotland and Director General of Health and Social Care, gave a short reflection on kindness and compassion in health and care.
Some Highlights
P.S: Reflecting upon ‘Partnership working across sectors: a multi-professional perspective’, I think what matters here is in knowing and understanding one another. It’s also about building positive relationships. By cultivating and orchestrating the expertise of unique individuals/teams/organisations/sectors, we can work together to reach a common goal/purpose.
“Only by working collaboratively, compassionately and by being ambitious can we effectively integrate health and social care. We must look at what impact we have made to date – and crucially, identify what we need to do to drive integration forward. #hscs19.”
